Doctor Who themed wedding, first look.

I don’t hide the fact that I’m a pretty unabashed nerd.  So when I saw the Lord of the Rings themed wedding (along with nods to their other favorite fandoms) that Kimberley and Josh had planned, my geeky heart went pitter-patter.

Some of my favorite ways kimberley and josh used decor in their Lord of the Rings themed wedding:

Like many nerds, including me, they couldn’t limit themselves to just ONE beloved story. Walking around their wedding felt like searching for real-life Easter eggs. I definitely spotted elements from Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones. It’s very possible there were others I missed. I love how authentic everything felt.  There was no doubt whose wedding you were attending, and it all felt so true to them.

This may be one of my favorite first looks ever, because BOTH people had an outfit to surprise the other. Kimberley and Josh met while contra dancing, so it was no surprise that they both chose attire that really flowed with their movement. I think the best part is the fabric that lined Josh’s coat. If you look closely you can see a bunch of tiny TARDISs (TARDI?), though I’m sure they’re bigger on the inside).

Kimberley and Josh were married at The Riverbend in Lyons, Colorado.

  • You get married RIGHT NEXT to a river (as the name might imply).
  • The rocky cliffs on the other side of the river are awe-inspiring.
  • You can get ready in an awesome tent. Not like your camping tent you throw in the car. An amazing tent.
  • You can bring in any food vendor you want. Kimberley & Josh opted for a pizza food truck, which was perfect.
  • Lyons is a cute town with lots of lodging and activities available for your guests. Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are also not far away.

Given their love of dancing, it was no surprise that the reception was a real party.  Some of their guests already knew how to contra dance, while it was new for others.  I even gave it a shot, though it was considerably harder with 20 pounds of camera equipment.

How do you finish up a Lord of the Rings themed wedding?

With a silent disco and more pizza. Obviously.

Congratulations on a spectacular (and totally “you”) wedding, Kimberley and Josh!

Planning your own Lord of the Rings themed wedding (or anything else with a fantasy vibe)? Bishop Castle in Rye, Colorado has been on my bucket list of places to shoot a wedding.  I would be thrilled to pretend we’re conquering dragons together.
